Critic Reviews for Birds Without Names

  • Birds Without Names is littered with belligerent relationships, beautiful scoundrels and bad sex. What makes the film stand out from the crowd, however, is actress Yu Aoi's against-type performance.

  • Birds Without Names is a great piece of work from director Kazuya Shiraishi, that not only succeeds as a great romantic drama but as an actors showcase for all involved, especially Yu Aoi, who gives her best performance yet.

  • The film presents a boldly nihilistic world view without anyone to root for, yet it does so with impressive craft and commitment.

  • Aoi is impressive as the poisonous Towako but it's Abe who pulls the story along with his small frame and dog-like abjection. The content may be objectionable, but the performances are strong.

Heroine is not especially likeable as she goes through life making people as miserable as she is and falling for unsuitable men despite having a loyal, if uncouth, boyfriend. I saw this as part of the Japanese film festival and very much enjoyed it.
