Movie Info

Veteran Serbian director Goran Paskaljevic leaves the battles in the Balkans behind for this drama set in rural Ireland. Believing that "a man is measured by his enemies," Harry Maloney (Colm Meany) sets out to ruin George O'Flaherty -- the most powerful man in town, who not only owns the local pub and most of the businesses in the area, but is also the local matchmaker. When Harry's son Gus -- upon whom Harry regularly heaps abuse -- falls for the lovely Eileen, George helps broker their nuptials. All the while, Harry quietly mobilizes his dastardly plans. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Audience Reviews for How Harry Became a Tree (Bitter Harvest)

Goran Paskaljevic has transposed a Chinese fable to 1920s rural Ireland, where its story of consuming hatred between neighbors inevitably serves as a pungent metaphor for the Bosnian conflict, which prevented the Yugoslavian director from making the film on home soil.

First of all I love Colm Meaney. I have enjoyed him in everything I have seen him in. First time I saw him was when he was in Star Trek--The Next Generation. He star's here as a bitter man who hate's a pub owner. The movie is base on a Chinese short story. But told in a very Irish way. Wonderful dark comedy. Chillan Murphy and Adrian Dunbar also star in this movie. If you can get a chance to see it do so. Bitter Harvest is an American title. The real title is called "How Harry Became a Tree." [img][/img] Hey All, Here is another film I had gotten in the mail this past week and it’s called; “Bitter Harvest”. I never heard of this film before until I did a search on Net Flex. I don’t know what make of this film while I was watching it. There were some definite funny parts to this film but there were parts I could have done with out. I think there parts to this film were it didn’t need music in it. Do you know what I mean? I don’t want to give away the film. In the film there was parts were the two supporting characters were having sex but there was music playing during it. LOL! Maybe that’s a bad description but I don’t think there should have been any music during that part. It just reminded me of really bad drama during that part. Instead of getting awe affect from me it made me laugh. In my little humble opinion there could have been more of an explanation to the two main characters feud with one another. Other than those things I think this film was a very enjoyable film. I thought the cast did an amazing job which included Cillian Murphy, Kerry Condon, and Colm Meaney. “Bitter Harvest” is about this crazy Irish man’s feud with a local store owner. The audience is never let in on why or how the feud began. Well, when the kindly shop owner tries to give a wife to the crazy man’s son that’s when the real trouble begins. The shop owner has issues of his own. The crazy man realizes his son is depressed and agrees to the marriage. For some reason the crazy man gets even more insane through out the film. Now I know I probable didn’t give a great description that this film deserved but I would suggest this film to people. There isn’t any bonus features to this DVD (I think it probably would have helped out a little). Please see what you all think. Fritz ;) [img][/img] [img][/img]
