Unusual John Wayne vehicle, with Lauren Bacall her usual stunning self. Not quite the later brilliance of their last joint venture 'The Shootist' but interesting none the less.

Fascinating anti-commie tract about a sea-going escape from Red China to Hong Kong. Fascinating doesn't mean good, of course - it's pretty slow going at times, and the racist stereotypes are hilariously cringeworthy. But it's a warped slice of a history we don't get many films about, and the blatant politicising is awesomely unsubtle.'s the Duke, you know...and a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do...

No need for an inflated, descriptive review here. This is a solid, albeit ignored John Wayne film that was bashed by the big critics. Just watch and enjoy.

Great movie! Wayne and Bacall work terrifically together!

Lets face it, John Wayne could not act, but for some reasons got movie roles, here he murders yet another great script with wooden acting and a poor attempt at comedy, Lauren Bacall is fantastic, but Wayne's insipid voice and shambolic acting murder this vintage piece

not nearly as patronizing to women/Chinese people as expected (though certainly still insulting). a lot of fun and good story

Good John Wayne film, though a little anti-climactic.

Choppy and slow John Wayne drama here. Here he's paired up with legitamitely-bored looking Lauren Bacall as he steers a ferry boat of Chinese immigrants to Hong Kong! That'lll teach those Commies! Throughout this, Wayne just can't stop puffing up his cheeks and start verbal hemmoraging the Reds. Meanwhile, the story is awkwardly put together and just ENDS without no real satisifactory climax. Not a very big highlight of either one of their careers, I'm afraid.

A really cool movie and John Wayne doing what he does best, killing commies and seducing Lauren Bacall. The on location look to it really sells it though, it doesn't feel like just a generic studio movie, it looks like they're in China. It's interesting that John Wayne co-directed this at such an early time to, it's a great job for a first movie or a seasoned director. All around it's just a fun semi-war movie with some interesting early views on communism.

Great title, weak film. Wayne escapes after being held prisoner two years by the Chicoms and is asked to help an entire village flee communist China and escape to Hong Kong aboard an old paddleboat. Bacall is in top form in this and Mike Mazurki has what is about the best part in his life, but Wayne is saddled with a "imaginary friend" he talks to throughout the film he names "baby" (oddly, Bacall's nickname). "Baby" helps him get through the 2 years of captivity without going crazy (or maybe not!). It's a awkward device and doesn't fit the Duke. William Wellman's direction is plodding and there's no way the interiors of the ship match the size of the exterior shots of the ship. Look for Wayne old buddy Paul Fix as the spokesperson for the Chinese villagers.
