A handsome matador is trapped between his dedication to his wife and his passion for an aristocrat. Blasco Ibañez, who wrote the novel on which the film was based, was furious with the depiction of Spain as a backward culture and Paramount did not screen the film in Spain until his death. Still, despite its shortcomings, the film has one of the best performances of Valentino, which sealed his reputation as a Latin lover, as well as a direction which put in use all the creative means of silent cinema. The life, flaws, and death of a great athlete. In this case, the toreador.
Blood and Sand is immensely cliched and predictable in its familiar storyline and the overreliance on intertitles is unfortunate, but the film transcended its obvious flaws thanks to a very good direction, some very memorable scenes and shots and Rudolph Valentino's competent performance that ranks among his best. But Nita Naldi honestly stole the show for me with her vamp character who was just a lot of fun.
Although bull fighting is a big no for me.
I love this film. Rudi is sexy from the beginning to the end, a must for Rudi fans. Great costumes and set through out, Great story line, Good acting from all. Sound track accompanying can be a little annoying but can easily be removed and personalised to you own tastes on YouTube. For Rudi fans, the dressing scene has been found ; ) .
good silent melodrama
The sweeping Romance Tragedy staring Hollywood's Great Sex Symbol Rudolph Valentino.
This is a story of love, lust, loss & Bullfighting full of Melodrama this is but Valentino was a great actor & undoubtedly had a presence to him.
In many parts the film drags heavily but the story is rich & the Bullfighting scenes are quite impressive. Beautiful costumes & the encapsulates all the elements that make Silent Film great, an interesting film....
A bullfighter who becomes a Spanish celebrity experiences the lust that comes with fame and fortune and may wreck his marriage to the only woman he ever loved. Some narrative elements are clearly outdated. On the other hand, the passionate scenes of lust seem daring for its time, and one cannot avoid noticing an underlined protest against bullfighting, which is also admirable. But mostly, it is the legendary Rudolph Valentino, whose charisma once again takes the overall quality of the film up a step.
Silent classic features Rudolph Valentino cementing his reputation as the exotic lover from far-off lands, the matinee idol of the Jazz Age to millions of young star-struck female fans. But unless your idea of entertainment is watching a pantomime of passion in the form of slow arm movements and languid and lengthy gazing into eyes, you may find yourselves looking at your watch a bit. However, as a historical record of Hollywood's early grandeur, one can forgive the creakiness in this opulent but cliched tale of a young married bullfighter's fatal dalliance with a bewitching aristocrat.
This movie was boring, but at least I learned that people were concerned about animal cruelty in the twenties. If you like bull-fighting and sappy romance, though, you will enjoy this.
*** (out of four)
Rudolph Valentino's star was on the rise and this film helped solidify him as one of the leading actors of the silent screen era. And while it isn't his best film, it is good one.
Valentino is a young man who wants to rise out of the poverty upbringing he had and provide a good life for his widowed mother. He becomes a bullfighter and soon a big celebrity. But he becomes tempted by a rich woman, which threatens his own marriage.
