Blue Crush never bobs to the surface as anything other than a formula picture.

The film would have been more enjoyable had the balance shifted in favor of water-bound action over the land-based 'drama,' but the emphasis on the latter leaves Blue Crush waterlogged.

What you end up getting is the Vertical Limit of surfing movies - memorable stunts with lots of downtime in between.

Man, is this movie mentally deficient. We're talking Wheel of Fortune stupid.

When the movie attempts to tell a story on land, you might want to bring along a flashlight and a magazine.

And although this film wants to invite the invigorating spirit of a competitive female-oriented sporting fable, Blue Crush simply rides the waves in mediocrity while achieving no real sense of splashy excitement despite its scenic vibrancy.

The only ending that would have made me happy is if Blue Crush suddenly became Jaws 5.

Blue Crush is as predictable as the tides. ... The movie feels stitched together from stock situations and characters from other movies.

Like [a TV ad] for a sports drink that invites you, perhaps, to "catch the wave," camera riding the crest to capture that refreshing feeling caffeine-free Blue Crush provides.

I weep for the future when a good portion of the respected critical community in this country consider Blue Crush to be an intelligent film about young women.

To anyone who takes it for granted that females are capable of making up their own minds and taking risks, Blue Crush has nothing to distinguish it, save some exciting surfing footage.

Blue Crush is so prolonged and boring it isn't even close to being the barn-burningly bad movie it promised it would be.

Some surf movies fail because they take surfing too seriously, dwelling on the spiritual sense that comes from riding on the surface of a mighty power. Blue Crush fails for the opposite reason.

The body-doubling and face-pasting are unfortunately blatant.

The movie isn't nearly dumb enough to be much beach fun.

Most of the storylines feel like time fillers between surf shots. The movie isn't horrible, but you can see mediocre cresting on the next wave.
