Bohemian Rhapsody

Critics Consensus

Bohemian Rhapsody hits a handful of high notes, but as an in-depth look at a beloved band, it offers more of a medley than a true greatest hits collection.

Movie Info

Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury's lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that were always more like a family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

  • The only redeeming value of Bohemian Rhapsody is it's so bad, there's plenty of room left for a much better biopic about the one and only Freddie Mercury.

  • As for Freddie Mercury, is this his real life? Is this just fantasy - not sure that really matters either. When Malek's strutting like a peacock, this movie is a decently amusing escape from reality.

  • Malek does an impressive job of re-creating Mercury's moves onstage, but the core of the performance is Malek's intensely thoughtful, insight-rich channelling of Mercury's hurt, his alienation and isolation even at the height of his fame.

  • Ideally, a film like this would attempt to add to, or to contextualize, a legacy. Instead, "Bohemian Rhapsody" tries to sanctify it, pack it in bubble wrap to protect it from causing, or being caught in, any friction.

Entertaining biopic about one of the most popular bands of the 20th century. Considering nothing awfully exciting happened in their history, the film is forced to allow itself some inaccuracies for drama's sake. Most are forgivable, pretending that Live Aid was a flop until Queen started to perform is pretty stupid, though. As far as the cast goes, Malek deserves the praise he has been getting. The rest of the band has less to do but is perfectly cast as well. I also can't say I see the film trying to hide Mercury's homosexuality. The awards praise (Malek excluded) is maybe a bit much, but the film itself is fine.

The music of Queen is such a collection of hits that this alone makes for a good time, but the movie is visually appealing as well. Rami Malek is fantastic along with the rest of the crew, good direction by Bryan Singer. This movie takes you on a wild ride right by the bands side, I loved the insight into thier journey as a band.

I am sensitive to criticisms from the gay community about how Freddy Mercury's homosexuality is depicted in Bohemian Rhapsody. The film is far from perfect, but I can't deny that I enjoyed Hollywood's version of Queen's successes and struggles.

It has all the usual bad biopic cliches with the added problem of completely robbing Freddie Mercury of any agency.
