This is the penultimate film for illustrating the detachment from reality that often plagues dedicated critics of art: A 17% from critics versus a 93% from over 240,000 users.
Critics only seem to appreciate when individual film elements are exceptional or original. This movie doesn't try to excel in any single element, but instead employs a combination of respectable action, humor, Dirty Harry ethics, and detective-work storytelling to produce an overall very enjoyable film. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
I find it rather odd that a critic who enjoyed Dirty Harry would give this movie such a negative review. To quote Vasquez: "Dirty Harry is still a rough and tumble action movie about a loose cannon cop who walks around with a humongous hand gun putting an end to crooks and lousy thugs."
The Boondock Saints, meanwhile, is a rough and tumble action movie about three loose cannon civilians who walk around with automatic guns putting an end to organized crime leaders (who were responsible for a few more murders than those "crooks and lousy thugs"). This movie is like a modern Irish sequel. Unless he really prefers the semi-noir style of Harry over Irish people, I just don't understand how you can love one film and hate the other.

Hate to break it to you dude but just because the large populous likes it doesnt mean its good. The masses love Justin Bieber and Katy Perry while critics give them humbling to scathing reviews. Public opinion in no way carries the same weight as a critical review. While I cannot speak for all critics out there, the major published critics are well educated in film theory, the art and history of cinema and watch way more movies than the mass population. There is such thing as a good and a bad movie and its not just based on whether or not you were entertained, and I think critics have the most well-informed opinions of this.
The fact that you would compare Boondocks Saints to Dirty Harry, a genre classic, shows how little you know about movies and what actually makes a movie good. Dirty Harry invented the rogue cop movie trope and brought with it a level of moral complexity to the story and the character of Dirty Harry that is not found anywhere in Boondocks saints. The Boondocks saints is completely sophomoric in its simplicity and aping of better films. The characters and scenario are by-the-books one dimensional with no motivation or second thought past "They're guilty, they must die." I think the worst part of the movie, although, is how one-sided it is. The movie completely takes the side of the saints, turning them into totally sympathetic heroes. There is no grey area of this film, no ambiguity to the rightness of their actions. The movie completely glorifies and justifies their actions completely sucking any depth from the story and message of the film. That is why this film sucks. It requires no thought and makes no challenge to the subject matter. It is not a morality piece, it is not a cautionary tale, it is just a brainless albeit stylish action movie that tries to force a moral conundrum at the end by asking "Was it right what they did?", after almost two hours of straight-faced glorification of the Saints killing bad guys.
Long story short, never compare Dirty Harry to Boondocks saints. Its like comparing Mercedes to a Scion with an after-market muffler and 22in rims.

Wow u sed it perfectly man....on a lot of levels. I totally agree with u. Thanks for posting that.
What's crazy to me is that I didn't even enjoy "the style" of this movie which is apparently one if it's major selling points for fans. The other is the subject of vigilantism which, jeez, are we in the seventh grade still? I get it, they're "heroes taking the law into their own hands"...its been done so many times before.
I didn't see Dirty Harry until just a few years ago and leave it on every time it comes on TV. It's so rich on a lot of levels. This movie, however, fell thru the floor with me and I will probably never know how it ends bcz I won't give it the time of day....luckily I only wasted about an hour or so watching as I finally just turned it off.
Apr 22 - 01:08 PM
Because "Dirty Harry" was a good movie.
Apr 6 - 11:17 PM
I totally agree. This movie is being vastly over thought by these critics who are detached from reality. It's a great movie
