The dialogue is mostly spry, the ending inventive. And Barklem-Biggs, who initially overdoes the feckless cretin routine, grows into his role beautifully.

Borrowed Time does have its heart in the right place and you'll happily invest in the likeable lead characters.

As buddy movies go, Jules Bishop's effort is distinctly patchy, with elements of social realism colliding awkwardly with cartoonish caper comedy. What redeems the film are the performances by Barklem-Biggs and Davis.

The tone of the film may be a little too cartoonish and whimsical for its own good but this is still a winning, odd-couple heartwarmer.

Complete with a brooding, gentle score that compliments the picture well - Bishop is a director to keep an eye out on for sure, as we look forward to see what he does next.

It's an absolute delight thanks to a warm and witty script, smart, no-nonsense direction and spot-on - and occasionally priceless - turns from a cast comprised largely of unknowns, aside from one lovely old lag.

First time out, the writer/director looks a very exciting prospect.

It exudes a certain low-key, pootling charm, but often gets sloppy: who casts Perry Benson as a middle-class snob?.

Bishop's debut feature wants to warm the heart and tickle the funny bone, both entirely admirable aims, but doesn't quite cut it as a work of cinema.
