Feste isn't shooting for easy laughs, or even prolonged ones. She wants nervous giggles to come with a muttered "there but for the grace of God go I."

Boundaries keeps the syrup on medium, and Plummer looks like he's having a ball. If you have a penchant for broken wing syndrome, you may want to let this one into your life.

It's the best thing Feste has made to date, which isn't saying much, but she shows newfound interest in emotional authenticity here.

The writing is smart and funny, the scenery along the Pacific coast is glorious, and the performances are all topnotch. It was a labor of love for the director, and her close connection to the material is apparent.

...As much as you may spar with every moment of cliche in this oddly familiar family yarn, the struggle is futile. The movie simply has too much humanity, and too much charm, to pass it off as a Little Miss Sunshine with shelter animals.

Predictable and never totally convincing, Boundaries nonetheless features a fine performance by Plummer, who pours on the roguish charm.

For a road-trip movie, Boundaries doesn't have much momentum, and while its many stars offer committed performances, it never rises much above meh.

The quirky characters and the road trip that Laura and her family take are likable enough but the story has been done before

At one point a character states that saving a human being is difficult, and in addition to working as a nice juxtaposition to animal rescuing, it's a sentiment felt watching Boundaries

Boundaries makes a few tweaks to the formula, some of which are welcome and others which are baffling... but overall it's pleasant enough.

Mildly wacky road-trip shenanigans meet mildly uncomfortable family dramedy. The saving grace? The cast is a joy to spend time with.

Say what you will about the film, it's the animals that steal the show.

That's the easy, low-grade charm of "Boundaries." Like the effects of Grandpa's weed, its performances loosen up - and at times even find the profundity in - a stiff and sometimes silly tale.

There's real love in that routine, and that's where Farmiga and Feste shine.

A narrative that enables these brilliant actors to shine and lures viewers in on their wild ride full of mayhem, shady pot-dealings, and inspiring moments of self-discovery.

A film full of quirky characters, clichés, and metaphors galore, Boundaries clearly isn't trying to reinvent the wheel.

Every so often, writer-director Shana Feste will drop in a line or a situation that doesn't feel like something she picked up from Indie Screenwriting Tropes 101, and you feel yourself being drawn into the story.

There's an unpredictability in Plummer's performance that keeps this dramedy on its toes even as its inevitably gets more and more predictable.

Being in the presence of Plummer these days is always time well spent.

Boundaries is something of a lesser joy, not exactly funny enough to be a full-blown comedy, not exactly compelling enough to be gripping in its drama.
