Reality TV / Police Operation show, with Kelly Chen being the flick-bitch... but I'm a fool for Johnnie To's movies...

Breaking News is quite out of the ordinary, providing a spiced action along with a psychological mediatic war. Strongly advised.

Lots of hardcore action and gunplay to be found in this action thriller!

Breaking News lives up to its title and is another successful Hong Kong crime thriller for Johnnie To.The story only takes 90 minutes to unfold and it starts off on the right foot. The 10 minute introduction does what it's supposed to do; introduce the characters, set up the story, and deliver flying bullets. To top it all off, it is done in one continuous cinematic shot. The film does move at a slower pace, but the concept of the story helps to avoid complete boredom. The action is unleashed at the right moments, which isn't a whole lot in comparison to the rest of the story; however, those segments are nicely written.Richie Ren is cool, calm, and collected. The trio of major cast members is rounded out by Kelly Chen and Nick Cheung. The opening sequence alone is worth a checkout. The rest of Breaking News is also recommendable.

Very smart thriller with a very powerful underlying message about society and media. This is pure action from the first to the last scene, no interruptions. A should see if you are into fresh experiences.

Action packed film about a televised bank robbery that ends up being terribly mismanaged by the police. This spectacular Chinese production is signed Johnnie To, a master of the genre. It includes enough great special effects and amazing fight sequences to leave its audiences more than just satisfied.

the last in a string of good Johnnie To movies ('Running on Karma', 'Throw Down') that I've seen. The directing is jaw-dropping at times. Johnnie To's movies pretty much never evoke any emotion in me, but here i was pretty amazed by the story and camera.

It's got close to no plot or character development and unfortunately the action falls apart at the end when everything just turns nonsensical. The film seems to think it's pretty hard hitting, but it's completely lightweight.

Not fussed...

Johnny To's attempt at social commentary on the state of media in Hong Kong works best when it just focuses on the action. Some of the better set pieces of recent memory including a "one take" shootout to get things rolling. When it slows down to "say something" is when it lost me

A 7 minute shootout done in one take opens this crackling crime thriller, and it never lets up after that. It is also able to juggle the story through different perspectives, and balance action with the theme of media being used and manipulated. They even go so far as to develop the villains, so the movie is not so one sided. A fantastic movie with sharp social themes and explosive action.

"Breaking News" starts with a stakeout of Yuen's(Richie Ren) gang going badly awry as it devolves into a running shootout. To make matters worse, a policeman is killed, the criminals get away and the whole fiasco ends up on the nightly news. Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Fong(Kelly Chen) comes up with the idea of the police videotaping the arrest of the criminals in order to reassure the public that they can do their job properly. Inspector Cheung(Nick Cheung) is one step ahead of them and still on the case, by the way, has cornered the criminals in an apartment building.

There is a lot in "Breaking News" that might seem familiar to viewers with its media coverage of an ongoing police situation. What's different here is the lack of chaos, with both sides vying to be in control of the message and attaining levels of success. So add to that Johnnie To's kinetic style of filmmaking(especially in the opening tracking shot that gets more suspenseful as it goes on) and you have a smart thriller that also entertains. However, the movie is not without its share of faults with inappropriate comic relief and major characters that come and go as they please.

A Die Hard in apartment floors with a realism feeling. Ren (任賢é 1/2) plays a fine villian providing good dialogue, Cheung (å 1/4µå (R)¶è 1/4?) as the cop in charge plays a fine intense good guy, buy Chen (æ...§ç?³) is so annoying & her character is such a show off with some embarrassing lines. The most embarrassing scene in this film when the director To, shows when all of the cops are having lunch, because the bad guys are having something to eat.

Nice try, but it can never be rebellious in some sense~

Good ideas, great scenes... but a little empty at times.

Egész kellemes akció film. Sok lövöldözéssel, de szerencsére kevés amerikai filmekre jellemzÅ? hiper-szuper effekttel :)
