This Is Us regular Chrissy Metz makes her presence felt as the boy's mum, and Topher Grace and Josh Lucas bring modest star power to a slick if sometimes slushy against-the-odds drama that's perfectly watchable, whether you subscribe to its claims or not.
It's moving, painful, to watch...because there's such a good cast and such a compelling story, a lot of this works...but it's undermined, a little heavy-handed when it didn't need to be...still, one of the best faith-based movies I've seen.
At each and every crossroad, it feels as if you hit a brick wall with a red neon message scrolled before you just in case you missed what was happening. With contrived and sometimes stilted situations, the film lost its verve.
Better directed and better acted than other examples of the genre I have taken in, it earns a closer look. However, what really hurts BREAKTHROUGH for me as a work of film, though, is its repeated handwaving at truly complex issues.
Breakthrough is about more than faith. A universal film that combines hope, love, community and God to inspire, reflect and rejoice. This might not be a breakout film but might help others have a breakthrough.
Breakthrough has a resounding and obvious message of love, which is strong enough to tug at this critic's heartstrings. Except Roxanne Dawson has to glaze the film in Hallmark sappiness before the actual message starts to become clear.
