This Is Us regular Chrissy Metz makes her presence felt as the boy's mum, and Topher Grace and Josh Lucas bring modest star power to a slick if sometimes slushy against-the-odds drama that's perfectly watchable, whether you subscribe to its claims or not.

Here is another illustration of how the faith-based drama has pushed into cinemas material indistinguishable from vast swathes of the afternoon TV schedule.

A bold tale of faith is lifted by some decent performances, however the inert narrative breaks the spell.

Breakthrough could have been done in an interesting way had its makers not been intent on turning it into a Sunday school recruitment video.

As the film's saccharine sanctimoniousness swells, the intendedly God-awesome turns to the increasingly God-awful.

I wished it wasn't targeting its demographic so hard, it felt like things were forced in there, but I still enjoyed it.

It's moving, painful, to watch...because there's such a good cast and such a compelling story, a lot of this works...but it's undermined, a little heavy-handed when it didn't need to be...still, one of the best faith-based movies I've seen.

At each and every crossroad, it feels as if you hit a brick wall with a red neon message scrolled before you just in case you missed what was happening. With contrived and sometimes stilted situations, the film lost its verve.

Better directed and better acted than other examples of the genre I have taken in, it earns a closer look. However, what really hurts BREAKTHROUGH for me as a work of film, though, is its repeated handwaving at truly complex issues.

...divine and soul-searching. Breakthrough is warmly inviting for its ability to be honest, moving, melancholy, and deliver its truthfulness in profound revelation.

Shallow - yet inspirational - aimed directly at an evangelical Christian audience.

Finally, there is a film that truly exemplifies what it means to have faith.

Barely fresh. Chrissy Metz rocks. Other than her performance, this is a faith-based flick that often falls through its own ice. Definitely one for the Hallmark TV movie of the week crowd.

Breakthrough is about more than faith. A universal film that combines hope, love, community and God to inspire, reflect and rejoice. This might not be a breakout film but might help others have a breakthrough.

You need to have a bit of a cold heart not to be touched by Breakthrough.

Another glib and unconvincing faith-based movie that pushes miracles, spirituality and divine intervention, hoping for box-office gold. A terrific cast is the only thing that saves it from last rites.

one of the more authentically moving entries in the genre, fueled by a gripping lead performance from "This Is Us" star Chrissy Metz.

Sustenance for the faith-based and an interesting look at a devout culture for non-believers.

Breakthrough has a resounding and obvious message of love, which is strong enough to tug at this critic's heartstrings. Except Roxanne Dawson has to glaze the film in Hallmark sappiness before the actual message starts to become clear.

It's a harrowing tale that deserves a much better movie than this insipid junk.
