This brand of lazy, simple-minded propaganda is long past its sell-by date, and Breakthrough does next to nothing to break out of that cycle.

There is literally one moment in which it raises an interesting theological problem, then goes right back to what it was doing before...a movie designed to preach to the choir.

Here is another illustration of how the faith-based drama has pushed into cinemas material indistinguishable from vast swathes of the afternoon TV schedule.
May 16, 2019
A bold tale of faith is lifted by some decent performances, however the inert narrative breaks the spell.

Breakthrough could have been done in an interesting way had its makers not been intent on turning it into a Sunday school recruitment video.

As the film's saccharine sanctimoniousness swells, the intendedly God-awesome turns to the increasingly God-awful.

At each and every crossroad, it feels as if you hit a brick wall with a red neon message scrolled before you just in case you missed what was happening. With contrived and sometimes stilted situations, the film lost its verve.

Better directed and better acted than other examples of the genre I have taken in, it earns a closer look. However, what really hurts BREAKTHROUGH for me as a work of film, though, is its repeated handwaving at truly complex issues.

Another glib and unconvincing faith-based movie that pushes miracles, spirituality and divine intervention, hoping for box-office gold. A terrific cast is the only thing that saves it from last rites.

Breakthrough has a resounding and obvious message of love, which is strong enough to tug at this critic's heartstrings. Except Roxanne Dawson has to glaze the film in Hallmark sappiness before the actual message starts to become clear.

It's a harrowing tale that deserves a much better movie than this insipid junk.

Shamelessly milks supposed miracles from God for every Christian the studio can get into a theater over Easter weekend
April 18, 2019
A mostly preachy but occasionally compelling dramatization of a true story.
April 18, 2019
The film is flat, with an openly religious look and insists at all costs to leave an edifying and unquestionable message in an era in which the lack of questioning is a major evil that afflicts society. [Full Review in Spanish]

That, perhaps, is the role movies like Breakthrough serve. They are simple sermons dressed up in seductive trappings of Hollywood cinema.
April 17, 2019
Yet another limp, poorly assembled, and underdeveloped stab at faith based filmmaking from a major studio, Breakthrough will only appeal to true believers with exceptionally low standards.
April 17, 2019
Less a story than it is a sermon, aimed directly at the choir and nobody else.
April 16, 2019
Sincere but heavy-handed...One breakthrough that 'Breakthrough' does not achieve...is the one that would move it beyond preaching-to-the-choir status.
April 15, 2019
Lots of small, potentially affecting dramas buzz around the center of Breakthrough before the movie swats them away to focus on the power of prayer.

Anything but true to its own name.
