A classy cast give this the air of a prestige production, but it's a disreputable exploitation flick at heart.
Fanning is in fine form as a woman who can't vocalize her emotions, though it's Pearce here who steals the show.
There's an odor that lingers long after "Brimstone"'s final fade-out. And it's not sulfur.
I'm all for heroic exertion in pursuit of one's art, but in this case I wish Koolhoven had tried therapy first.
For all the visceral depictions of hatred and violence and human destruction, it feels as if the director is chasing his own tail and forgetting about making it all mean something.
The carnage pushes you away (and wears you down), even as the genre, industrious cast, beautiful landscapes and stark, often striking visuals pull you in.
If you can handle the films of the aforementioned von Trier, you can probably make it through Brimstone and find it a rewarding sit.
Starkly beautiful, and beautifully acted, though its relentlessness does become wearing; reiterating what women already, depressingly, know. Guy Pearce is terrifying, Dakota Fanning brings warmth and depth.
I have no problem with violence in the movies but it needs to have some kind of purpose.
The film is beautifully shot, its wide landscapes and monochrome snow scenes are unforgettable. Seeping blood is a recurrent image, and its more horrific scenes are a hard watch.
What does work in the film is the slow, torturous sense of foreboding.
Inevitably, some viewers may find certain scenes are unpleasant and distasteful. But if you like films of an unusually dark hue, you'll find an intriguing revenge thriller here that has the ability to get under the skin.
"If you thought Guy Pearce was a scumbag in part 1 just wait 'til you see part 2! If you thought Guy Pearce was a scumbag in part 2 just wait 'til you see part 3! If you thought Guy Pearce was a scumbag in part 3 just wait 'til you see part 4! If you thought--"
This is just a really shitty film. Edited horribly, boring, and just really disgusting and uncomfortable to watch.
