Movie Info

In this drama, a Croatian man and his family leave war-torn Bosnia and relocate in Auckland, New Zealand (his wife is a native Kiwi). There, they struggle not only to survive on the law's fringes, but also to stay together. Patriarch Ivan supports his clan by smuggling drugs. Business is lucrative enough for him to get even more family members out of Bosnia. Trouble brews when his strong-willed daughter Nina insists on getting a legitimate job waitressing in a Chinese restaurant. At work, she meets Eddie, a Maori, and the two eventually fall in love, much to the dismay of Nina's father. To further raise the ire of her sexist and racist father, Nina agrees to a marriage of convenience with Wu, a Chinese co-worker who is desperate to find a way for himself and his girlfriend to remain in the country legally. When Ivan learns that Nina has become pregnant, the stage is set for even more problems.more

The situation is not original, but the setting makes it seem so, and the director and co-writer, Gregor Nicholas, is alert to nuances of the characters.
