Inevitably, there is something a little uncertain about it sometimes, but the principals, Del Walker and Anne Gooding, are winningly real, there is freshness and life and as a historical record it's pure gold.

Although rough around the edges and containing some weak supporting performances, the depiction of the restless, day-to-day existence of ordinary youngsters was arguably the most authentic at the time.

In the way it imports neo-realism techniques to the depiction of working-class London, as well as an evocation of a part of the capital that the 2012 Olympics has helped to disappear, it's a fascinating timepiece.
