Movie Info

With Bruoguminn (AKA White Night Wedding), Icelandic cause-célébré director Baltasar Kormákur updates the Chekhov play +Ivanov and geographically transports it to the island of Flatey, just off the Icelandic coast. At the outset of the tale, literature professor Jon prepares to wed onetime student Thora, the daughter of the region's most prosperous clan. Sadly, however, disadvantageous circumstances threaten to stand in the way of the couple's happiness, including a fiscal dispute between the family of the bride and the family of the bridegroom, and by Jon's complicated past - a past that involves a prior marriage that gave the young man grave self-doubts and made him feel deeply unworthy.

The films uneasy shifts in tone disrupt the sense of rhythm needed for the comic elements to work.

...it's almost impossible work up any enthusiasm for the foibles of the various characters thanks to an emphasis on eye-rolling instances of quirkiness and melodrama.

Audience Reviews for Brúðguminn (White Night Wedding)

Irritating & confusing- almost none of the characters is lovable enough to project thyself on; the message of the whole movie looks totally contradicting after all. Too cold, heavy & serious for a comedy but too light for a proper drama. What remain are the acting from the ensemble cast & the landscape of Flatey, Iceland.

An unorthodox wedding caper in which, if you Google Image search the name of the town, you can see a real slice of life: the houses are all there, it truly is a piece of Icelandic culture (I presume... what do I know about Icelandic culture). Someone in Iceland must agree, too, it took home seven of that country's national film awards including best picture. The story focuses on a professor entering his second marriage, this time with one of his students, and the upheaval it causes given the circumstances: he owes her parents a lot of money, and the mysteries around the end of his first marriage, among other things. The professor spends the night before the wedding getting drunk with his friends, and many realizations are made before the wedding is to take place. Very interesting movie, well worth checking out.
