Movie Info

Director Laurin Federlein teams with screenwriter and star Magnus Aronson to tell this tale of a traveling dreamer who travels Scotland on his moped in order to promote his mobile disco. While Vincent's (Aronson) vision of a traveling dance club is incredibly vivid, it gradually seems to disintegrate due to the indifference of the locals and the difficulties in navigating the harsh terrain. Though he once thought that the lonely and isolated inhabitants of the region would welcome his innovation with open arms, he quickly finds that they might just be too content to get up and dance. In the end, Vincent must own up to the possibility that perhaps by alleviating the boredom of others he was actually attempting to ward off his own ennui.

This beautifully daffy road-movie musical is as inspired, whimsical, and commercially unconcerned as its protagonist.

This film-school grad project does rep an arresting debut for British-based German helmer Laurin Federlein.

Build a Ship, Sail to Sadness is a movie every bit as cumbersome and trying as its title.

Despite the apparent ugliness and sloppiness of the piece, there's a real gem of inspiration at the core, and the character of Vincent is wonderful.
