It goes for pace and parody rather than wit, abounding with Victorian clichés about grasping anatomical surgeons, drunken dolls, daft soldiers and pompous worthies. The consolation lies in the minor roles.

The humour may be too broad in places -- corpse-based slapstick pales with repetition -- but, for the most part, 'Burke and Hare' is well-timed and often funny.

It is not a bad film exactly, and it's worth continuing to watch to see which famous face will pop up next.
