Movie Info

A man comes face to face with his troubled past in this psychological drama from Moroccan filmmaker Ahmed el-Maanouni. When Amin (Hicham Bahloul) was a boy, he was orphaned and sent to live with his uncle (Az al-Arab Kaghat), who wasted no time putting the boy to work in his ironwork shop. Amin's uncle was a tyrant who verbally and physically abused the boy, and years later Amin is still haunted by his childhood despite a successful career as an architect in France. When Amin learns his uncle is seriously ill and not expected to recover, he returns home to the Moroccan village of Vez to pay a visit and come to terms with the man who raised him. In Vez, Amin renews his friendship with Aziz (Mohamed Marouazi), who worked in his uncle's shop and often protected Amin from his wrath; Amin also meets Aziz's girlfriend, a prosperous shop keeper named Lalla (Nadia Alami), and is introduced to a pretty girl who works in her boutique, Hourya (Amal Setta). Amin enjoys spending time with Aziz and finds a kindred spirit in Hourya, but he becomes wary of a confrontation with the uncle who has been in his thoughts much of his life. Al-Koloub Al Mouhtariqua (aka Burned Hearts) was a major prize winner at the 2007 Tangiers National Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
