Here is a tiresome act of self-indulgence that looks like a gussied-up film-school piece - a flatly acted pastiche southern gothic with dabs of David Lynch and early Harmony Korine.
Blows its chances by keeping us waiting way too long for revelations.
Buttercup Bill is not, despite, initial appearances, headed toward Twin Peaks. It's is, rather, a messed-up, highly erotically-charged two-step.
The leads have a potent chemistry, which is reinforced by the tantalising flashbacks and the refusal to embrace linearity or the male gaze.
This deathly dull southern psychodrama searches for (but doesn't find) something interesting to say.
[A] woozy, erotic and disturbing Southern indie-gothic concoction.
Like the relationship it lays bare, Buttercup Bill is tender, playful, moving and deeply disturbing.
a down-and-dirty southern gothic of unresolved childhood and arrested guilt, where no amount of sweltering heat can end the big chill of love mistimed and death postponed.
