Movie Info

The story of the man regarded by many of his fellow Brazilians as "The Black Pope" is explored in directors Paolo Betti and Clóvis Bueno's award-winning entry into 2005 Vancouver Film Festival. Freed from slavery to wander the countryside and claim his identity in the new republic of Brazil in the late 19th century, João de Carmago (Lázaro Ramos) was known as everything from a mule herder to a drunk before a divine vision prompted him to construct the "Church of the Red Water" and fulfill his destiny as a spiritualist by combining Catholicism and African spirituality. Subsequently recognized by the people of Brazil as a saint and spiritual healer, de Carmago's spiritual quest would later ignite controversy among the disapproving ranks of the orthodox Catholic hierarchy.
