See more BRizz 2 @TheMovieSearch Jun 22 Campfire Tales is a spooky anthology-style horror film that was released in 1997—but honestly, it feels much older. The look and feel of the film scream 1980s, maybe even 1970s, which was surprising once I realized it came out in the late ‘90s. The writing, pacing, and overall vibe are definitely more in line with older horror flicks, which could be a positive or a negative depending on what you’re into. Christine Taylor was fine in her role—she’s really the only recognizable face in the cast. The rest of the actors didn’t leave much of an impression. They were just… there. The story itself is centered on a group of friends sitting around a campfire telling scary stories, which is a fun and classic setup. There’s charm in that idea, and it has potential to be really engaging. However, the execution didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Instead of focusing on one strong story, the movie jumps into multiple tales that we as viewers are forced to fully sit through. It quickly becomes too much—there’s no time to connect with any one plot or set of characters, and it ends up feeling more repetitive than creepy. Then we get to the twist at the end: they were all dead the whole time and were ghosts telling stories to each other. Honestly? That just felt lazy and uninspired. It wasn’t the kind of twist that made me rethink the movie; it was the kind that made me roll my eyes. I wouldn’t call Campfire Tales a terrible movie, but it’s definitely not something I’d revisit or recommend. It had potential, but the way it was put together didn’t do it any favors. The stories I found to be fairly original and the acting was OK, not surprising since there are some well known actors. There are some plot holes which is why I didn't give 5 stars. But my favorite part of this movie is the ending. It was a really cool twist I did not see coming. See more Read all reviews
