Movie Info

Murga is a vital, joyous form of performance that grew in the working class neighborhoods of Argentina. A mixture of music and dance performed in the streets as part of annual celebrations, murga celebrates what is good in life and seeks to overcome what is bad, with the colorful costumes worn by the participants telling the tales of their joys and sorrows. Alison Murray is a Canadian filmmaker with a background in dance, and she offers a look into the subculture of murga and the people who bring it to life in the documentary Caprichosis de San Telmo. Murray focuses on Pichi, a cab driver from Buenos Aires's San Telmo community who is organizing the annual murga performance and must bring together a large troupe of amateur dancers, drummers and musicians, many of whom are struggling with the trials and tribulations of life among the poor still but summon the creative energy to make the performance memorable. Caprichosis de San Telmo was an official selection at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
