Kirk Douglas is fine as legendary Israeli leader. Nice guest stars (John Wayne, etc.).

The results add up to a superficial biopic that casts anything but a giant shadow.

Audience Reviews for Cast a Giant Shadow

½

A way to long film of the fight to establish the nation of Israel. Skrimish fighting makes for some mildly interesting combat. If you like Hebrew, watch this film. Otherwise, try to ignore the dialog. The scenes with Sinatra, although very few, are token at best. Yul Brenner does an admirable job as always as the closest thing to a military mind at the time. John Wayne, the blow hard as always, thinks he's still in The Longest Day. A valiant effort to capture the thrilling days of yesteryear, this is more a narrative of our foreign involvement in other peoples business that has torn America apart for nearly a century.

Jeez, I didn't think it was ever going to end! Way overlong and far too many repetitive scenes and slow stretches. Kirk Douglas gives a sincere performance, and the basic story is an interesting one. Senta berger is miscast and the spattering of big name stars in cameo roles distracts from the film. (John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner etc.)

This is one of those great Hollywood epics they don't make anymore. I saw it a Jewish film festival and it's an interesting movie to reflect upon the birth of Israel. Cast a Giant Shadow tells the story of Mickey Marcus who as an American officer and lawyer who helped to create the Israeli army and also served as their first general. Of course they had to sex up the story for Hollywood but still their's great acting all around especially by John Wayne who was rarely better than he was here.
