Erwa's emotional candour ensures his film will strike resonant chords with anybody who spent their formative years extricating themselves from strangulating family ties.
With stunning visuals and sublimely constructed character depth, Center Of My World (Die Mitte der Welt) will immerse you in a dreamlike whirlwind of emotions, dark secrets and intricate relationships.
Still, as generic middle-brow entertainment goes, Centre of my World functions adequately. You wish the characters well. You crave for neat endings.
It's a delicately told tale and one that is greatly enriched by the winning lead performance from Louis Hofmann.
It's almost aggressively twee at times, and a subplot with Phil's distant twin sister is underdeveloped, but there's enough emotional nuance to elevate it above the status of escapist whimsy.
Austrian filmmaker Jakob M. Erwa adds charm and quirk to this German same-sex romance ...
