07/30/2017 One of my favorite movies of all time! See more 04/16/2006 Chac: The Rain God Directed by:Rolando Klein This is one of those movies that you are probably too nice to, just because there aren't really many like it. It's a movie about a tribe in the very isolated region of Chiapas, Mexico who despareately need rain to survive. So they go to a guru of sorts to try to encourage the Rain God to have rain. The movie is very authentic. I don't know who most of the actors were, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were all real natives. I think they were, actually. Apparently, the director graduated from UCLA film school and then just spent two years in Chiapas making this movie. The visuals are STUNNING in many parts. I don't think this is so much due to great cinematography as it is to competent cinematography with AMAZING locations. That said, as far as characters go, the movie is pretty thin. None of the villagers stand out as being particularly interesting, and we never really know all that much about them. The whole story is iconic, as it should be I guess, but I felt it ignored actual people too much still. It's a unique experience, a good experience. I guess that's enough. 7.0 Barry Lyndon Directed by: Stanley Kubrick And the last major Kubrick movie I hadn't seen goes down. It's been a long time coming. Anyhow...one thing right away: I do not think there is a character in the history of cinema that I disliked, personally, more then Barry Lyndon. I don't mean that as an insult to the film, he was a complete, interesting character, I just viserally despised him. He was such a selfish, dishonest, canniving, just dispicable human being, I couldn't help but hate him. That said, I still felt some emotion for him when he fell. Which meant the movie did at least a halfway decent job of doing what it wanted, I think. Still, I found this movie somewhat dull. I mean, not completely, but I felt it drug on too long and was, at times, understated to a fault. Not to make it a horrible film, just not a great one. The cinematography that everyone brags about was interesting, certainly, and it did come accrost as natural. That said, I'm not sure I felt the natural was necessarily better. I mean, I'm glad he did it, but I'm not sure I'd want it in another movie. To me, this was a good movie, but not a great one, certainly not as good as much of Kubrick's other work, especially 2001, The Shinning, and Dr. Strangelove. Maybe I'll like it more the more I think about it. I'm not exactly disappointed, but I'm not enthused about it either. It's the work of a master, but I'd have to say at this point, not a masterwork, if that makes any sense.
