Movie Info

Newly discharged from a psychiatric hospital, 19-year-old Neil Lawrence (D.J. Qualls), the son of the governor of New York, enrolls in an ivy-covered prep school to straighten out his life. Things look promising when he meets the lovely 17-year-old T.J. (Rachel Blanchard), but she has hidden problems of her own. When Neil, a closet J.D. Salinger fanatic, is assigned to write a paper about whatever happened to Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of Salinger's coming-of-age classic The Catcher in the Rye, he takes the project too far and sets out on an unauthorized, hazard-filled journey of discovery in New York City -- with T.J. along for the ride.

The melodrama of this film is odd considering the novel that inspired it.

If this sounds a lot like one of those angst-ridden teen movies: My Trip To New York With My Dying Girlfriend, that's because it is one of those movies.

Phony from beginning to'd be well advised not to catch the film.

A direct-to-video adventure in mixed messages and teen angst if ever I've seen one.

Audience Reviews for Chasing Holden

Chasing Holden is a story about the teenage Neil Lawrence, who has a writing assignment about the life of Holden Caulfield after Catcher and the Rye. To get the story Neil travels with a friend to find J.D. Salinger and along the way they get themselves into trouble. This film reminds me a lot of the film Ordinary People. The complexity of the character of Neil Lawrence surprised me. This story surprised me even though there were inconsistencies. Overall, it wasn't the worst nor was it the best.

I don't like D.J. Qualls that much, he's not really leading man material. I guess if you like Catcher in the Rye, it's going to be a better film because they make LOTS of references to correlations because the guy is obsessed!
