Movie Info

In this pseudo-biography of the legendary Cuban revolutionary -- played by Omar Sharif -- Che Guevara takes up the cause as a rebel fighter under the direction of Fidel Castro, played by Jack Palance. Guevara, a young Argentine doctor, proves his worth under the heat of guerilla warfare and, gaining the respect of his men, becomes the leader of a patrol. Castro is impressed by Guevara's tactics and strict discipline and makes him his chief advisor. When Castro defeats the Cuban dictator Batista after two years of fighting, Guevara, under Castro's nod, directs a series of massive reprisals -- but Guevara dreams of fermenting a worldwide revolution. After Castro backs down during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Guevara accuses Castro of being a Soviet dupe and leaves Cuba. Under disguise, Guevara lands in Bolivia, where he attempts to begin his dream of a worldwide peasant revolution, but the Bolivian poor will not follow his lead, and his band find themselves starving in the Bolivian jungle and pursued by the Bolivian army. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

The 1969 version which was directed by Richard Fleischer. This version starred Omar Sharif(of "Lawrence of Arabia",and "Doctor Zhivago" fame) in the biography of Argentinian revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara who helped Fidel Castro in his struggle against the corrupt Batisia regime, eventually resulting in the overthrow of that government and Castro's rise to his reign of power of the control of Cuba. The film itself is a spectacle of sorts from Guevara's life when he first landed in Cuba in 1956 to his violent death in 1967. The cast is top-notch including Jack Palance, Cesare Danova, Robert Loggia, Woody Strode, and Barbara Luna.....with a great musical score from composer Lalo Schifrin.

I don't know if I should laugh at the horrific casting (Jack Palance as Fidel Castro...!?!?) or the defanged storytelling about one of the most iconic figures the world has ever known. Omar Sharif looks like he's trying to do his best as Che Guevara but if you can get through this entire crapfest you're sure to discover no one's got much to work with. The whole afterward interview angle is terrible also. If I had to blame someone for the sheer awfulness of Che!, I'd blame the filmmakers who were undoubtedly out to make a quick buck and felt the imperitive need to strike while the iron was somewhat hot. In the end, all Che! really did was make the anticipation for Steven Soderbergh's project that much more unbearable. Watch Che! for free at IMDB if you don't believe me...
