A small town in Georgia has been haunted by a serial killer who began his rampage in the 1920s. The sheriff (Wayne Rogers) in charge when the first crime happens is unable to make any headway, despite his best efforts. The next police chief (Brad Davis), a crooked and racist cop, does little to unravel the mystery. When a black sheriff (Billy Dee Williams) is hired in the 1960s, the ongoing racial tension in the town -- much of it inflamed by the unsolved case -- reaches a boiling point.

It seems American drama tends to veer between simplistic morality tales like this where the good guys eventually triumph, and nihilistic tales where evil triumphs. I prefer dramas which lie in between these two extremes. Go to Full Review
