An animation with a good mixture of sci-fi and romance. Extremely well done for an 80's animation.
The story is really deep, which means you need to pay attention to understand everything. It is a bit tough in the beginning, but as the movie progresses everything falls into place and it is easier to understand.
The pace of the film moves quite slowly, but it isn't entirely boring. There is good character development and a love triangle angle to keep things steamy. The science fiction aspect seems a little cheesy at first, but you come to realize how great it is when you see the ending that results from it.
The action is good, but there is definitely room for more. The robotic fights are fast and intense. The way that the "microns" fire their missile clusters is absolutely brilliant. The ending is filled with everything you expect in a full out space fight and it is executed nicely. The blood factor is low, which may be a let down to some people, but most of the action does involve ships and robots. When it comes down to it, the explosions are all you need. The sound effects are great for an 80s film and they still do sound pretty good to this day.
Visually this film looks good. I've seen better, but it is nicely done for its time. The same can be said for the original Japanese voice over work.
In the end, this film will cater to science fiction and romantic animation fanatics. My only gripe is that the romance takes a front seat over the action. Still, that is no reason to not watch this.
