Yet you root for this movie the same way you might have rooted for Wepner. It's not a contender by any stretch of the imagination, but it has a certain tough, hard-earned nobility.

Chuck is a more than a worthwhile footnote to the continuing cultural significance still enjoyed by Rocky.

Chuck is a grueling, empathetic portrait of real-life heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner.

Moss and Schreiber produce what may be the best performances of their careers to make this film work.

We don't need another formulaic boxing biopic. Good thing Chuck TKOs the genre mold.

Like Wepner's favorite movie, Chuck is a requiem for a heavyweight, a palooka with nothing left but pride.

The former New Jersey butcher-turned liquor salesman had a story to tell, and Falardeau has no problem putting it up on screen, warts and all.

With the old patina of 1970s films, and the inclusion of archival images, Philippe Falardeau's film has the fresh and dynamic style of the genre. [Full review in Spanish]

Chuck, the film, is a lot like Chuck, the man, decently charming and mostly harmless.

It's a little bit pathetic, but Schreiber crafts such an innocence in his character that it's easy to root for him. And to remember him.

A slick, entertainingly silly movie that owes more to "Goon" than "Raging Bull."

Watching "Chuck" is like striking up a conversation with a stranger on the barstool next to you, and discovering that your new drinking buddy is a far more interesting fellow than he first appeared.

It may not go the distance, but it's surely worth a step into the ring.

Its greatest gift is that it doesn't try to make too much of his central character.

Liev Schreiber is top-notch in the lead role in this funny, sad and warm cautionary tale.

The film tells an achingly true story about chasing dreams and letting them slip through your hands, as well as the gravitational forces that cause one's life to seek its own level.

"Chuck" will never have the same glory as "Rocky," but it's a worthy little contender.

The downfall isn't as satisfying as the setup, and a sudden burst of energy associated with the introduction of cocaine actually acts to slow things down, but it's worth seeing for the performances.

Chuck nimbly dances around usual trouble spots to target the irony of modern celebrity culture: With the power of fame now trivializing its origins, any bum who wants to be somebody can suddenly wake up a contender.

Without that backstory, it would be a fairly unremarkable, fairly familiar ride. But with it, and with a fine turn from Liev Schreiber, it scraps its way to respectability.
