Simon T @MovieTart May 13 The problem with most of the early Cinerama documentaries is the equipment is so cumbersome and heavy that each is restricted to long and often static sequences that try the viewer's patience. There is a fair amount here that is genuinely arresting and interesting: Russia has some stunning natural beauty - the Chekhovian forests, the imposing architecture - so it's a pity that that we have to endure long episodes of animal torture - the slaughter of whales, the cruelty of circus lions having to ride bareback horses, wild boars hunted by dogs. And Bing Crosby's homespun narration pouring molasses over it all. This 'restoration' gives you an approximation of the width of the Cinerama screen via the very effective Smilebox filter, but it's a shame they didn't get rid of the very visible division lines and picture shudder of the three separate sections that make up the Cinerama image.
