Movie Info

A poor boy rises to a position of power and privilege as he grows to adulthood, but without finding the love he so desperately needs in the historical drama La Ciudad de Los Prodigios. Onefre Bouvila (Olivier Martinez) is born and raised in the Catalan countryside, but transplants himself to Barcelona as a young man to find work. After several years spent in dire poverty, Onefre joins a radical political group and urges workers to embrace the revolution. He also falls in love with Delfina (Emma Suarez), an anarchist whose father owns a hostel where he stays. Several years later, his ideals in tatters, Onefre leaves Delfina and embraces a life of crime, robbing banks and dividing his loyalties between two rival gangs. Onefre is able to use his crime affiliations to climb the ladder of political power, and in time becomes a wealthy and prominent citizen, but he is unable to regain the love he lost when he left Delfina. La Ciudad de Los Prodigios is based on a novel by Spanish author Eduardo Mendoza.
