Movie Info

Kim Ki-duk's Haeanseon (The Coast Guard) is set on the South Korean coastline. Kang Han-cheol (Jang Dong-gun) is an eager military private who wants nothing more than to shoot a North Korean spy. The villagers in town are at odds with the military presence because they claim there are no more spies. One night Kang sees two people on the beach who turn out to be a local girl and her boyfriend engaged in sexual intercourse. Kang shoots the young man and is celebrated by his fellow officers even though the villagers are outraged. The Coast Guard was the opening film at the Pusan Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I was never bored during this movie. It wasn't the best movie ever made but it was very well made, although I did hate the main woman in the story. It is about a South Korean coast guard who accidentally kills an innocent person who he thinks is a spy. It eats away at him until he goes insane, but he is still persistent to remain in the coast guard. I have only seen 3 of his movies.

(***): Odd but powerful film about how a tragic incident could affect so many people. It is made and told in an unusual fashion but this film remains memorable after viewing it.

Not one of Duk's best but still a powerful film. The film seems more confused than Duk's other work but still makes room for a rather involving story. Unlike his other work the film has an uneven pace, sometimes moving rather quickly and then moving slow, these do not juxtapose well.
