Movie Info

CODE 33 begins in June with City of Miami Police detectives investigating the rape of a young girl off Coral Way. One week later another young girl is raped around the corner. The police quickly discover that the same man is responsible for both cases, as well as five previously unconnected rapes in neighboring Little Havana. A task force of over 100 officers is formed to find the rapist. The media jumps on the story, raising public awareness and blasting police efforts. The sketches of the subject are plastered on billboards through out the city. Frustrated by cold leads and fueled by Cuban coffee, the detectives scour the streets. They stop more than 200 men without making an arrest. Angry, but determined, the detectives are convinced the rapist is poised to strike again. As summer ends, he makes and attempt on a young woman. This time the cops and the CODE 33 cameras are waiting.Using unprecedented access, the filmmakers go behind-the-scenes of the Miami Police Department's largest serial rape case. From the detailed process by which Steinberg creates the sketches, to the sexual battery detectives knocking on doors and following up leads, to the hi-tech forensic analysis, CODE 33 reveals those extraordinary moments in the investigation when a clue is uncovered, a theory is realized, and a match is made. With the news outlets jockeying for position and refusing to let the story die they too become key players in the investigation. The filmmakers turn their cameras on reporters as they work to gather new information and keep the cops in check. Finally, the filmmakers reveal the pulse of Miami by showcasing the diverse culture and strong viewpoints of members of the Little Havana and Coral Way communities. Having followed the detectives before the story made headlines they had a unique vantage point in which to capture the conflict between the police, the media, and the community.© -- Code 33 Productions

An interesting look into the everyday world of a detective... not as dramatic as seen on TV, but a more realistic picture with some intense moments.
