Critic Reviews for Combien tu m'aimes? (How Much Do You Love Me?)

All Critics (11) | Top Critics (3)

  • While lightheartedness is not a quality one readily associates with Blier, the movie is more frankly entertaining than most of his previous work.

    Dec 5, 2005
  • For those who buy into Blier's style, touching -- and funny -- human truths come shining through.

  • With perfume commercial pretentious shots scored to shrill opera and orchestral pomp, this is an insipid attempt to wring pathos from soft porn.

    Nov 7, 2012 | Rating: 1/5
  • Paraded around by Blier in various cleavage-popping outfits (and often nothing at all), Bellucci is an amnesia-inducing, hot-blooded presence, blowing the top right off the film with her pristine, slap-yourself-in-the-face magnetism.

  • It is likely that most viewers will be too distracted by Bellucci's pronounced physical charms to realize just how flat and unconvincing the rest of the movie truly is.

  • It is telling when a supporting character,...nicely played by [Jean-Pierre] Darroussin, garners far more empathy than the film's stars.

This is quite the film. I'm not exactly sure what to make of it since it is all over place stylistically and tonally. Much like a review points out here, there is no easy storyline to cling to and I think that is what makes this film such an anomaly to watch. There's no real reason for you to watch this movie as there's no story to speak of. I guess there is in a sense, seeing how the relationship between Francois and Daniela develops and evolves from strictly a financially inspired endeavor, for Daniela, to her actually developing feelings for him. Of course this story isn't told in the conventional manner as there are many ups and downs. Some expected, some not so expected. You could argue that the film was pretentious with some of its shots, its framing, and it's somewhat annoying operatic score, but I also think that gives the film at least something that is not so commonplace. Say what you will about this film, but it's more than likely that you've never seen anything like it. I don't mean that as a positive, or even a negative, it's just how it is. This is a strange movie that really is unlike anything I've seen out there. Personally, while the film benefits from Monica Belluci's radiant and sensual presence, I was a little frustrated watching because of that lack of a coherent narrative. The acting is solid, but it never comes together in something that I felt was a satisfying enough narrative. This is the very definition of an acquired taste. I will never say this is a bad film, because it's not even close to being bad, but, even though it has some entertaining moments of over-the-top and hammy acting, purposely, it's still a little frustrating because of the pacing and poorly constructed story. It's obvious some people will enjoy this more than I did, but I wouldn't exactly give it a glowing recommendation.

Awesome comedy of the world's oldest profession from another perspective. What would happen if a regular guy who has won the lottery (Bernard Campan) and has decided to spend his winnings being accompanied by a prostitute (Monica Bellucci) to be his round the clock wife. Hilarious antics are thrown all over the place until the pimp (Gerard Depardieu) catches on to what is hooker is onto...and intervenes. The outcome of how this turns out goes lame in the end...but the outcome which gets lost in the end where finding acceptance for love is more than is inevitable. See this. It was pretty good!

just how far can you stretch a thin joke?? Well, in this movie they try to stretch it from start to finish, and the result is a rather boring movie after the first 20 minutes or so. If you dont mind admiring Monica's beauty and ego, then go see it. If you are looking for a meaty plot, forget it. This movie is lighter than helium.
