Communion does not push for an emotional response from the audience. It doesn't have to.
"Communion" is a heartbreaking example of a classic documentary genre - the immersive, observational film that takes a bold leap and embeds itself with a small group of people.
The burden of premature adult responsibilities forced on children by childish adults has rarely been captured quite so vividly as in "Communion."
A bleak film but a necessary one, Communion is leavened with humour and quietly celebrates Ola's impressive endurance.
Zamecka, through the pure vérité of her observational lens, offers searing criticisms of Polish society and its full-throated re-embrace of Catholicism since ... communism.
Anna Zamecka's documentary enthralls the viewer primarily because we care about this family. We root for the day that Ola can live a worry-free life and just be a teenager.
As gripping as it is stressfully withholding.
In an epoch when billionaires like those in "Crazy Rich Asians" get fannies in the theater seats, thank god for a film like "Communion".
The film becomes a document of Ola's lost innocence, hardening her to the reality that faith only gets us so far. She prays for happily ever after, but never deludes herself from knowing happiness is a reprieve from more pain.
A winning portrait of a teen girl's resilience in the face of family dysfunction and personal despair
A fly-on-the wall documentary captures the fragility of family life in this awards-winning feature by a debut director-writer-editor-producer.
