In honor of Black History Month, everyone should see this very moving and heartfelt film, based on a true story about a white teacher in South Carolina who traveled to an island off the coast of Beaufort to teach African American children. I lived in South Carolina and knew of his story. Great movie.

The movie very accurately depicts the struggles that the African-American community faced during that time period. I think the structure was such that it needed people like Mr. Conroy to step in and stick up for what is right instead of maintain a broken status quo.

Jon Voight at his best. Worth a look.

I may be a little biased, being a teacher myself, but this movie speaks so loud and clear to everyone, regardless. Loved the metaphor at the end. Highly recommend!

social problems almost unknown, I think, and good acting. authenticity of characters, no schemes, no evident judgements

A gem of a fiind! I came across this film one night whilst flipping through the channels and was hooked. A must see.
