Movie Info

A housekeeper tries to break through the silence of a traumatized child in this touching comedy-drama featuring Whoopi Goldberg. The story, set during the 1950's, is a loose adaptation of the autobiographical experiences of writer/director Jessie Nelson. Manny Singer, who writes jingles at an ad agency, is devastated by his wife's abrupt death from cancer. To handle his grief he becomes deeply involved with his work. His 9-year old daughter Molly is even more devastated and has completely stopped talking. Her muteness worries Manny and he desperately searches for a maid that can care for her. After many interviews, he hires Corrina Washington, an educated, spunky, and slightly eccentric woman whom he thinks Molly will relate to. The woman and child do indeed gradually bond. Manny too is drawn to Corrina and they begin an interracial romance that was at times complicated by racism. The story does have an upbeat ending though.

A perfect little movie. A heartwarming story about the healing process, an impressive performance from a child actor, effective handling of a divisive issue (in this case, race and interracial relationships), and nice bits of music, from Manny's commercial jingles to his father's deaf violin-playing.

In this comedy-drama set in the late 1950s, Manny Singer (Ray Liotta) is a songwriter who makes his living penning jingles for radio and television commercials. Manny's wife has recently died, leaving him an emotionally broken man; Manny buries himself in his work rather than deal with his grief. His young daughter Molly (Tina Majorino) is taking it even harder; since her mother's passing, Molly has refused to speak. Manny realizes that he needs help taking care of the house and looking after Molly, so he places an ad looking for a maid who can double as a nanny. After a long series of unsuitable applicants, Manny meets Corrina Washington (Whoopi Goldberg), who isn't much on cooking, cleaning, or domestic chores -- but who strikes an immediate chord with Molly. Corrina gets the job, and her vivacious, unconventional personality brings the joy of living back to the Singer home. A romance also begins to bloom between Manny and Corrina, though Manny quickly discovers that being in an interracial relationship in 1959 is not always easy or pleasant. Joan Cusack and Don Ameche highlight the supporting cast.

Corrina, Corrina - A story as full of surprises as the human heart.. When Manny Singer's wife dies, his young daughter Molly becomes mute and withdrawn. To help cope with looking after Molly, he hires sassy housekeeper Corrina Washington, who coaxes Molly out of her shell and shows father and daughter a whole new way of life. Manny and Corrina's friendship delights Molly and enrages the other townspeople.. Ray Liotta and Whoopi Goldberg are amazing together.. Tina Majorino gives a wonderful performance..
