Sacred Heart (Cuore sacro) Reviews

Sacred Heart struggles mightily to say something profound, but nothing ever really culminates in a way that feels compelling. This kind of story can be entertaining, but the central narrative is simplistic and painfully dull, and the ultimate message about finding a balance in life is relatively pedestrian. It's not a complete failure. The filmmaking is competent, if sentimental, and the performances are acceptable, but it's all in the service of a storyline who's twists you can see coming from a mile away and who's thematic elements feel trite and dissatisfying. In the end, for a film that purports to have tapped into the notion of what makes life fulfilling, Sacred Heart fails to justify its own existence, these ideas never feeling all that fulfilling themselves.

The film follows an award-winning real-estate tycoon who meets a young, supposedly vagrant girl after an appointment at a set of flats she's set to renovate. Apparently, the girl was supposed to represent the spirit of the woman's dead mother who happened to live in one of the rooms she was set to renovate. Heavy on the symbolism and irrelevant side-stories that makes a huge bodge-job of what is essentially a very simple fable. The characters were well-cast, especially the leading lady, though I'm not entirely sure they all knew what exactly they were supposed to represent. When the young girl dies, whom Irene has a formed a close bond with, she decides to carry on where Benny (which isn't short for anything) left off. That Benny was a strange character. Completely immoral but uncharacteristically altruistic, she eventually got mowed down by a car after running away from someone who caught her stealing. The item she stole was meant for Irene, which is what sparks off her plan to convert the flats into a drop-in centre instead of luxury apartments, much to the dismay of her business partner. There are a few other sub-stories, which wouldn't have been missed if they were left out completely. The ending wasn't as ambiguous as I thought it was going to be. Heart-warming if you don't mind going around the houses to get there.
