Imagine if 127 Hours was a horror/thriller and that perfectly describes this movie. While there were some pacing issues, with Julianne Hough's character seemingly being trapped in her car, at her foot, for far too long, I think they managed to make it as interesting as possible given the circumstances of the situation. The movie takes place, for the most part, in Mallory's fiancee's overturned vehicle and it can get a little dull at times. 127 Hours worked, in large part, because they presented various elements of that character's life, through flashbacks, which helped add some depth to the character. This movie is straightforward in its characterization and there's nothing wrong with that, but I just felt that the movie would've been slightly more enjoyable if there had more of a cat-and-mouse chase. As it stands, however, this is a perfectly decent little flick. There's all the basic stuff there, you see Mallory battling the elements, starvation, dehydration, flooding, etc, etc. It's, really, a little dull at times, because it almost seems to borrow entirely from 127 Hours. And I can't blame them, because that movie was fantastic. I guess it was done, in part, in order to differentiate itself from the many movies like this that are out there. Oh, a woman being hunted down by a psychopath? Been there, done that. At the very least, this approach gives it a little bit of a twist and seeing how Mallory escapes her situation is fairly interesting stuff. Not completely compelling, but interesting enough to make you want to see the film to its conclusion. Like I said, the setting of the overturned car gets a little old long before Mallory gets out. But, at the very least, I appreciate the film trying something different, if it can be called that, instead of telling their story the same way it has been told throughout generations. The acting itself is perfectly fine. Nothing to write home about, but it's definitely gets the job done in a serviceable manner. Nothing special about the film's look however, nothing wrong with that, but there's really nothing remarkable about it. The film has modest ambitions, it's content to be at the level it is and not compete with any of the 'big' horror movies, so that lack of pretension is always appreciated. And the movie is short so, even if you hate this, then at least it's over quick. I didn't hate it, felt it should've been better, but at the very least it's an average, therefore watchable, film. Can't say you should go out of your way to see this, but I'm sure some will find stuff to enjoy about this movie, even if they don't like all of it.
