Ray Yeung's comedy Cut Sleeve Boys tells the story of two Chinese/British gay men named Mel and Ash. The two middle-aged friends attend the funeral of a former acquaintance named Gavin, and begin to question where they are in their own lives as a result. Mel starts to wonder how much longer he can maintain his endless string of plastic surgeries to maintain his looks. Ash decides to try life as a transvestite in order to find a man who will stay with him. Soon a secret from Gavin's past complicates matters for the two protagonists.

The performances are fairly static, but Lim and Leow are charming enough to hold our attention.

Despite original touches, Cut Sleeve Boys is mostly a mediocre gay-themed movie plagued by tired humor and slapdash filmmaking.

[Director] Yeung handles [his characters'] parallel journeys of self-discovery with humor, grace and an occasionally heavy hand, with Leow giving a winning performance as Ash.

Terrible soap opera that not even the most ardent admirers of the most high-camp aspects of gay culture will find anything to their liking.

Audience Reviews for Cut Sleeve Boys

"cut sleeve" is Chinese for "gay". It's a good movie with a good story and some situations one might relate to, or not. I think it's worth a look.

Cut Sleeve Boys (2007): "When I die, I want glitter balls, go-go boys, and all my past shags present." - Mel Two British-Chinese gay friends (sweet Ash and calous Mel) are rudely introduced to their own mortality when a closeted friend suddenly dies. Booted from complacency, they immediately begin the search for their dream man. Of course, a search for a dream anything begins and ends with yourself. It's gay humor, but the message is universal. A good film to show on a Monday movie night at the gay bar. Rest assured, it will go in one ear, and out the other.
