The genuine rapport between Peters and the magnetic Abdi...mainly succeeds in keeping it all on an even keel.
A lively tale bent on deepening our understanding of its sensationalism-ready subject.
It's not as cute as it thinks it is.
It never quite charms us into identifying with its goofy, nothing-to-lose hero, whose desperate to move out from his parents' basement and jump-start his journalism career.
Simplistic dramedy. enhanced by another superb performance by Barkhad Abdi...
Learning the craft while doing it
While the story does seem a bit laid back and comedic for such a serious subject, it is entertaining and well-acted by Evan Peters, Al Pacino and Barkhad Abdi.
Writer-director Buckley seems to think that his viewer wants to know more about Bahadur than about Somali pirates. At least he can make that funnier.
Writers like Hemingway often have exciting lives. This biopic enthusiastically tells of another exciting young journalist who risked his life to write about Somalia.
A well-intentioned but not a well-developed attempt to correct the Western world's conception of Somalia as a dangerous and lawless place.
The Pirates Of Somalia stays true to its source material with a thoroughly insightful and honest exposé, it marks Peters' arrival as a cinematic virtuoso and yet another outstanding directorial effort from Oscar nominee Bryan Buckley.
... never makes the case that Jay is the character most worthy of our attention or sympathy.
The rapport between characters in this is great as an aspiring journalist tries to make a name for himself by visiting Somalia and reporting on sea piracy. Engrossing and also funny, whilst it may not be entirely true it is very entertaining.
