Characters are thoroughly unlikeable, and difficult to identify with. The best part of the movie is the secondary characters who get very little screen time.

Unusual but funny. The script is witty and hilarious in its college level pomposity. The acting is outstanding and it makes a good contrast to a movie like Animal House, which is another nonsensical movie about the college and frat experience, although about four decades apart. The ending to this flick is great--light and fluffy--a nice change from way too serious type movies.

The dullness of this movie makes it seem like it's going on forever. I was happy when it was over.

Damsels in Distress is not a catchall sort of movie with wide, mass audience appeal. At best it's a niche film targeted at a specific audience. It's a movie for acquired tastes, a picture built on quirkiness and unusual, to say the least, characters, dialogue, situations, and settings. It's a sharp divide sort that will leave some in the audience laughing hysterically and others wondering what's so funny, never mind what's actually going on and/or what really defines these characters beyond their quest to reshape their school.

WTF was this about. Amazed if they sold more than 10 tickets to this bomb. This movie SUCKED.

Damsels in Distress has some supporting characters and moments that take the humor a little to ridiculous, but Violet, played by the ever-charismatic Greta Gerwig, is such a unique, complex, and hilarious character that really propels the movie forward.

This is quite possibly the worst movie ever made...

This film is worth watching just for the speech by the frat boy Thor about the value of learning. This offers a wonderful and funny spoof of the seriousness and silliness of our glorified "college years."

Stillman's films are certainly an acquired taste, they're classically written, dialogue heavy affairs combined with vibrant cinematography (ala Wes Anderson). This is definitely his most accessible film to date, thanks to its young, hip indie cast, a consistently clever script and some refreshingly vibrant color saturation that really gives the film a warm summer feel. Indie superstar Greta Gerwig and beautiful former model Analeigh Tipton are both fantastic in their lead roles, but it's Gerwig that steals the show. She captures Violet's brazenly confident but emotionally fractured mentality so perfectly that you will be wholely invested for its brisk running time. Also it features a lovely rendition of one of Fred Astaire's timeless dance numbers from his 1937 classic with the same title. A slick, witty and touching romantic dramedy for the indie crowd. Highly recommended.

I've always liked Whit Stillman, but the existential angst and constant talking, talking, talking that I loved so much in "Metropolitan" and "Barcelona" grew tiresome in this movie...

Hilarious deadpan. A story of self-righteous nostalgic college girls.

Greta Gerwig in a tailspin in Whit Stillman's world.

Got through maybe 20 min of it and had to turn it off. Horrible!

While perhaps not as satirically biting as it seems to think/hope it is, there are enough witty comments about human behavior and charming, if not knock-out, performances by the cast (Gerwig and Tipton are perfectly cast) to make this a success in my book.

Good drama. Not "education"

Recomendable.

will never get this movie out of my head. it's hard to say if that's good or bad.

I like Shawkat and Plaza, sadly they only get cameos. "A mannered comedy that's an acquired taste." Echikunwoke is gorgeous. Not a fan of Gerwig or the annoying, haughty way her character Violet speaks. A stupid chick flick with few good laughs. "Its characters are unrecognizable to those of us inhabiting the real world, and despite its mounds and mounds of dialogue, it ultimately doesn't have a sticking thought in its pretty head."

An odd but fun little movie. I wish it had skewed a little more toward the absurd, but even with its uneven tone it was very enjoyable.
