Movie Info

Dual documentary Directors/Producers D. Channsin Berry (Urban Winter Entertainment) and Bill Duke (Duke Media) took their cameras into everyday America in search of pointed, unfiltered and penetrating interviews with Black women of the darkest hues for their emotional expose', Dark Girls. Two years in the making and slated to premier at the Toronto International Film Festival, Dark Girls pulls back our country's curtain to reveal that the deep seated biases and hatreds of racism - within and outside of the Black American culture - remain bitterly entrenched. Dark-skinned Black American women from all walks of life will be covered with a key focus trained tightly upon women struggling for upward mobility in the workplace of Corporate America. -- (C) Official Site

Critic Reviews for Dark Girls

Despite being under-researched, it's still an effective film. Like '42,' this documentary kindles great respect for those who've faced hardships because of the color of their skin color.

Audience Reviews for Dark Girls

Very good documentary. Shows a little insight in what our society instills in us without even knowing. Which shows how stereotypes start forming.

A refreshing account mainly dealing with the experience of "dark" women (mostly "black"), from the voices of these women and some men. I hope a film like this can start a discussion about the world-wide discrimination that darker-skinned people face, and the solutions that lie partly in an examination of our own beliefs and values, and partly in changing the class-driven, socioeconomic structural forces that perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

Became aware of colorism after watching Spike Lee's SCHOOL DAZE, but never gave it much thought. It's just another effect, the white folks have bestowed into the subconscious of black society. As for the corporations who sell skin bleaching cream, the ceos should be ashamed (but they never will be, so they should just burn in Hell) and the product be removed. P.S. Bill Duke still kicks ass.
