Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Critic Consensus: A kinetic, violent and surprisingly worthy remake of George Romero's horror classic that pays homage to the original while working on its own terms.

The new version has its share of disturbing moments, but writer James Gunn and director Zack Snyder have stripped away the social satire of the original and put little in its place.

The remake, from first-time director Snyder, keeps much of the gore and loads up on the laughs, but eschews all pretence at cultural criticism in favour of high-octane, almost nonstop action.

Audience Reviews for Dawn of the Dead

The first ten minutes including a disturbingly brilliant title sequence (with Johnny Cash's "The man comes around") are excellent and frikkin scary. After that it gets a little too predictable within the genre tropes and some scenes (the birth especially) are unnecessarily sadistic and disgusting. Entertaining enough until the insultingly stupid found footage end credits reveal.

Although the acting and make up are weak, is there really any honor movie where that can't be said? Cliché script and poor character development prevent a higher score for what is otherwise a surprisingly exciting and interesting film -- well, for a horror film, that is. Certainly a good remake.
