Reeling from a breakup and alienated by her social circle, Jane Kittering turns to the one place she can find solace: the Internet. It's there, in the depths of a doomscrolling binge, that she stumbles upon an app for a best-friend delivery service. She orders up Zoe, a real live human who quickly becomes a trusted confidant, therapist, and motivational speaker all rolled into one. But the vibes don't last. Despite the companionship, Jane still can't fight the urge to stalk her ex, and seeing the latest pics of him and his new ladyfriend sends her running back to the web. This time, it's an app for image consultants. Enter London, a Gen-Z social media guru who recommends a complete overhaul for Jane, from her fashion choices and skincare routine, to her facial structure and personality. Jane does her best to keep up, but the endless parade of posts and pics only seems to lower her confidence. Yet the lower her confidence, the more reliant she becomes on the apps to fill the void. And as London's ever-growing entourage of young assistants comes to take over every facet of her life, Jane begins to question just how replaceable she is.
