  • A more than competent, fugue-like manipulation that freshens familiar components with a tricky structure.

  • So while Demonic expertly delivers all the bumps in the night that fans of this genre love, it is also haunted by its own paradoxical narratology, engendering something slyly manipulative and deeply irrational

  • Doing so much that's been done before, with little room left for anything truly original, Demonic is ultimately a flat experience.

  • The Will Cannon-directed movie is a whodunit come haunted house caper come satanic stormer and despite these being familiar themes, the actors and editing ensure that it's a scream.

  • Despite the screenplay's crafty curve-balls there's still a distinct sense of déjà vu as each thread is drawn together, while an unconvincing police slip-up is inserted to help drag the story out.

  • A typical case of a good idea gone wrong, the mix of genres feels forced and the rest of it are just cheap scares. [Full review in Spanish]

A decent enough polish over a run of the mill ghost story can't hide miserable and forgettable actors, a thinly strewn and rushed plot and a boring premise. Not much to say about this one other than that it's once you can safely miss. The film does have its fair share of jump scares at the beginning that are decent enough, however the plot rushes from past to present to video tape to interview that it's a bit of a puzzle to sit and watch. The actors give decent enough performances but none enough to stand out really, James Wan is brilliant enough to write this one off.

The basic premise for this film is interesting but when you think about it, the film doesn't work. Why don't the detectives take the subject back to the station? The finale is interesting and would've worked had the entire film done things differently. James Wan has switched things up after producing this, all the films he has focused attention on has done quite well. This film has ambitions but the plot is a mess and the film has a good ending that means nothing because you have no idea what's going on. I like clever films but this isn't clever, just short sighted filmmaking, I'm still puzzled on why the detective shot an unarmed suspect for screaming into the radio. Don't believe the trailer, this film deserved to miss the cinema and while being better than a lot of horror films, just not by much. 30-09-2017.
