Rather turgid low budget desert epic. Ralph Meeker is a French Foreign Legionnaire who falls for an Arab woman (the very non-Arab looking Marla English) whose father, John Carradine, has sworn to kill all Legionnaires. It's essentially a western cavalry picture set in North Africa, but it's a pretty dull one peppered with a few decent action sequences.

I see that Hal Erickson of Bovi calls the action scenes in this deliciously bad movie excellent. Well, the 2 minutes of action I saw were pretty good, but the rest of "Desert Sands" is like a film of a badly acted, badly staged community theatre production. How could Ralph Meeker be so good in "Kiss Me Deadly" and "The Dirty Dozen" and be so eye-tiwitchingly terrible in this one? But he had lots of company. I didn't recognize any of the other male leads--with good reason--and the female lead, Marla English, was to this very experienced male filmgoer's eye a limp imitation of Yvonne DeCarlo. Poor John Carradine's best scene was his great death scene-- a knife thrown into his back.

Bland sand pic is full of stilted dialogue and wooden performances. Ralph Meeker while not always the most relaxed of performers was usually looser than he is here, it almost seems as if he had just been handed the script before the cameras rolled so stiff is he. The rest of the cast is little better, Marla English seems to be sleep walking. There are many other much better films in this genre out there find one of them and skip this.
