richard g @RT44676617 05/12/2021 Why couldnt this have been made with the atten to detail and at least something like the pace of "Victoria" or one of the Pride and Prejudice versions. Maybe were I younger I might have lasted longer than 5 minutes. I preferred the relevant scene from Blackadder 3 to this soap opera level nonsense. Slightly clownish from the outside, a young man running in and out of buildings, many shots of 4 young men in long coats, marching purposely along Victorian streets and around corners in long coats, loud expostulations, shots of bare breasts in art studios to an extent I highly doubt occurred in Victorian times, talks of who gets what model first, and NOTHING informative about the pre-Raphaelites, what they were about, why "pre-Raphaelite?" for e,g,? Just "rebellious young man, exciteable, full of themselves, a silly story filmed as if desperate the audience members are thick, have no interest in art, will be bored if people arent moving, shouting, and talking about sex. All in well detailed Victorian clothing and young woman probably a lot more beautiful, well-made-up and provocatively dressed than was the case. Often with a style and language more typical of the early 21st century than 200 yrs ago. Read the June 2019 review in http://infinitemonkeylatereview.blogspot.com/ with which I wholly agree. See more 08/07/2011 Based on the factual book about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Excellent. See more 08/24/2010 Just started watching this (I am up to episode three). Even though it caters a bit too much to our contemporary perception of celebrity artist, the performances and the story lines are ok. This is the story of the Brotherhood of the Pre-raphaelites, a group of english painters who bridged academic and modern art while embracing the ideas of John Ruskin seeking more authentic subjects and true-to-life themes during the mid nineteenth century. The "bad boy" image of Dante Gabriel Rossetti is pumped a bit too high, as is the fumbling stuttering personality of John Millais and the conflicted piousness of William Holman Hunt. A lot of the story involves the amorous adventures of the different characters and their plotting to achieve fame and fortune. But of course that makes for better tv drama than pondering where the artists got their ideas or their paints. See more Read all reviews
